Assessment Options - Mums In The Wood Education

Mums In The Wood will, in addition to the group and individual mock assessments that have been running successfully for the last 8 years, be adding on progress, potential and ability assessments for children of primary school years from nursery to Year 8 (aged 3+ all the way to 13 years). We do also offer assessments on an individual basis only for children who are in the higher grades as well. So do please get in touch if that is something you would like to book in.

We will also be holding talks, workshops and training for parents and children from time to time on entrance exams, assessments, coping with exam stress , school expectations and how best to prepare for the different stages of the independent school assessment processes.

Nursery (ASPECTS) Ages 3-4

Assessments are administered at the start and end of pre-reception and take approximately 20 minutes. They are computer based and presented in an engaging, fun, age appropriate way.

The questions are adapted to a child’s level as the tests progress and become easier or more challenging depending on how the child answers.

They have been designed to help identify a child’s ability, the progress made and if and where they may need more guidance and support depending on when the test is taken.

The tests will focus on the EYFS primary areas of learning and development – Literacy, Numeracy, Motor Development, Personal, Social and Emotional development and will help compare the child’s progress against other children of the same age (in literacy and maths).

Parents are therefore able to gain an understanding of both the academic ability and underlying potential of a child compared to their peers.
A full and comprehensive individual report will be produced which will be discussed in detail with the parents on a separate date.
Advice on school choices and individual learning plans will also be discussed in the course of the parent meeting.

Reception (BASE) Ages 4-5

Assessments are conducted at the beginning and end of reception and take around 20 – 25 minutes to complete. They are computer based and presented as a story-based exercise which covers the Early Years Curriculum.

Ability and progress in early literacy, early numeracy, communication & language, and Personal Social and Emotional Development are assessed. Similar to ASPECTS, it helps identify ability, progress and areas of development.

The questions are adapted to a child’s level as the tests progress and become easier or more challenging depending on how the child answers.

It is an objective, independent assessment that will indicate levels attained in literacy and maths development and will help identify a child’s ability, the progress made and if and where they may need more guidance and support.

Parents will be provided with an in depth report which will also highlight the EYFS prime areas of learning and development and will provide indicators as to what the levels of development are for children in both literacy and maths and how those levels compare with other children in the class and to national averages. Progress will be shown for all areas including literacy, numeracy, personal, social and emotional development.

Advice on school choices and individual learning plans will also be discussed in the course of the parent meeting.

Year 1 to Year 6 (InCAS) Ages 5 – 11

Tests are conducted annually. The assessments help identify development in key areas and is a computer based assessment accompanied by audio instructions. Areas that will be assessed, include Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Mental Arithmetic, Developed Ability and Attitudes. The assessment will take approximately 2 – 2.5 hours.

Parents will be provided with a comprehensive, in depth report that includes age-standardised and age-equivalent scores which compare children’s performance to average performance across the UK by age and provides diagnostic information on the strengths and areas needing improvement of pupils in literacy and maths.

Year 7 – Year 9 (MidYis) Ages 11 – 14

Tests are conducted annually and typically in the first term of school. The assessments help identify potential in a child and challenge each student at an appropriate level aligned to their ability with an adaptive assessment. It also helps set motivational and realistic targets for students with predictive data and Chances Graphs which indicate likely future performance at GCSE and IGCSE and in schools are used by senior leadership to better understand progress across the whole school to drive improvement.

It is a 50 minute test, covering, Vocabulary, Mathematics, Non-verbal and Reasoning Skills.

Year 10 – Year 12 (Yellis) Ages 14- 16

This is an adaptive baseline assessment which helps to unlock the full potential of students. Specific to Key Stage 4, Yellis helps you gauge an objective perspective of students’ strengths and weaknesses and see how they are likely to perform at GCSE and IGCSE.

Cognitive Assessments and Additional Assessments

These assessments are only accessible to Educational Psychologists.

We will work with our in-house Educational Psychologist to help provide parents with a true understanding of their child’s intellectual functioning. Educational Psychologists are trained to use assessments to explore how a child is learning.
Other assessment packages only use teacher-based assessments that can give some idea of potential ability, but are not direct measures of cognitive function.
Knowing a child’s level of intellectual progress and functioning will help us advise and provide an individualised learning plan, identify schools that are a good fit and formulate a strategy on how to turn that potential into achievement.
Educational Psychologist Assessments
Additional screener assessments (dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, working memory, processing speed, handwriting speed and sensory needs).
Intervention programmes such as Cogmed and Memory Booster.
Workshops and training for parents and children.
Accelerated Learning Plans – personalised plans devised by an educational psychologist to accelerate your child’s learning and to support any areas of specific need. (This is also a unique USP compared to other companies – the level of detail we can gather through the assessment is much more advanced, leading to appropriate intervention options.)

The Cognitive and Additional Assessments can be carried out on the same day or on a different day depending on parent preference. Conclusions, suggestions and learning plans will be included in the parent report should these options be chosen.
